A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the metropolis of Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a country struggling with entrenched crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by a trio of assailants, one of whom opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The reason of the shooting remains unclear and no one has been arrested have taken place, police said.

How It Happened

Law enforcement indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a premises near the Carlton Centre.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the implementation of security systems, which had been controversially occupied by unknown people, as per local media.

"It is alleged the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report said.

Surveillance tape showed a individual with dreadlocks and clad in what appeared to be a security uniform opening fire on Stock before making his escape.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but succumbed to his injuries across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the incident.
