The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Claims Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has claimed that parent company the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for an innovative pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who co-founded the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, announced how he will independently develop the controversial flavor within an individual series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Corporate Owner
The recent development intensifies the continuing disagreement among the internationally recognized ice cream maker and its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant that acquired Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders have claimed that Unilever along with its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked their company from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor becoming an Emblem for Support
The entrepreneur revealed via social media how he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that was done there.”
This particular fruit has emerged as an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians because of its colors, which closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement and Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in the occupied West Bank.
The new dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company which was first created several years back for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".
Management Shifts plus Upcoming Plans
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned from the company recently, after many years with the organization, mentioning concerns that its independence had been undermined following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.
At that time, Ben Cohen stated how “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values that established its foundation while upholding for over 40 years," he told media outlets.
