What We Know Concerning the Those Lost of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
No fewer than 16 individuals perished and over 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police have labeled a terrorist attack.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were transported to the hospital.
Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who are known so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Reportedly a father of five children, he worked as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and friends spoke of him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.
She recounted the events leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire started. “He pushed his body up because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.
The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
In a statement, a senior official expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of antisemitic hatred that we must combat,” the message continued.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
A national of Israel was also killed in the incident, as per reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still under care, with several in serious condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.
A wounded man is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.
He wrote, he recounted the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of shots.
“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
